Written guide and video showing the fight mechanics and tips so you can easily defeat Vaylin in SWTOR Knights of the Eternal Throne Chapter 9
Vaylin's special attacks and fight mechanics explained
This guide is written for beginners. There are no additional mechanics in Veteran and Master Mode.
Purple "Melee-Only" Aura
The fight against Vaylin in Chapter 9 of Knights of the Eternal Throne expansion to SWTOR has some similarities to the fight against her in the end of Chapter 8. She still has the "Melee-Only" Purple circle.
Let's begin with listing her special abilities and how can you avoid them completely or at least minimize the damage dealt to your character:
Force Blast
A 2s channel attack that can be interrupted. Doesn't hit too hard.
Force Overload
An eight-second long channel, marked on the ground with a giant faded red circle.
Run away from it or stand with your back against a pillar or the staircase in the middle of the arena. You can wait for it to end outside of the marked area.
As soon as you see the giant purple explosion, you can go back to her. Remember her melee-only aura/requirement.
If this attack hits you, you are knocked far back and if you have nothing behind you, you may fly out of the platform and be forced to restart the whole fight.
Force Slam
The Force Slam is Vaylin's last worthy of mentioning special attack. This is a fifteen seconds long channel that MUST be interrupted. If not, it takes a huge chunk of your HP and you are unable to act for the duration of her Slam attack
Helpful Tips and Strategies for the fight
Now, let me share with you a few helpful tips and tricks to help you defeat Vaylin as smoothly as possible.
Don't ever attack Vaylin from distance. She still has the same purple circle around her to indicate the area you have to stand in and damage her. Even if you are a playing a Ranged DPS class, you still have to stay next to her. Remember to save your CC breaker for her Force Slam.
If you have entered the fight without the support from Lord Dramath, you may need to heal yourself often by stepping into the green Healing Circles (Healing Memories) that will spawn from the front and back of the arena.
If you freed Lord Dramath at the end of Chapter 7 on Nathema, you will face Vaylin alone in Chapter 9. If you decided to keep him, he can make this fight very easy and much quicker. Try to keep your HP high for the first portion of the fight.
When the first one or two healing Circles appear, you can lure Vaylin into them. Each time she steps on one of the Healing Circles, they will take roughly 20% of her HP straight away.
Be careful and plan well ahead. If you aren't certain you can make it until the next Healing Circle spawns, it's better to take the HP regen.
If you opt for the running away from the Force Slam mechanic instead of taking the knock-back, you can time this moment nicely with the Healing Circles and have one to pick up just as you are running out of Vaylin's AoE.
When moving around the area, try not to run too far away from the boss as she will jump to you and deal additional damage in the process. You can move slowly towards your next Healing Circle instead.

I have recently done this in Story Mode with a character (Sith Assassin), whose gear is 100% obtained from the main mission reward boxes and the fight is quite a lot longer and more challenging, but still easy enough when the mechanics are not new to you.
